AStudy of Nurses¡¯ Perceptions on ElderAbuse
Ko Chung-Mee

Abstract
Purpose : This study was to examine nurses¡¯ perceptions on elder abuse.

Method : Across-sectional survey design was used to describe 385 nurses¡¯perceptions on elder abuse. Data were collected by convenience sampling. The instrument to measure the perceptions on elder abuse consisted of 22 items developed by Cho and his colleagues(1999). Data were analyzed using SPSS win 12.0 program with descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA.

Results : 1) The mean score of the perceptions on elder abuse was 3.92. Among the items of perceptions on elder abuse, the highest scored item was "kicking the elderly or hit the elderly with a fist" and the lowest was "disliking visits of the elderly¡¯s friends or relatives". 2) Nurses¡¯background characteristics did not show significant mean differences in regard to the perceptions on elder abuse. 3) Among nurses¡¯ background characteristics, the experience of receiving education on elder abuse showed significant mean differences in regard to the perceptions on financial abuse and neglect.

Conclusions : The results of this study suggest that nurses¡¯ background characteristics do not influence the
perception of elder abuse; however, the provision of hospital training on elder abuse contributes to recognizing elder abuse.
